7 Tips For Writing Great Essays

You have most probably just walked out of a lecture and you’ve been given a task – write an essay on the economics of china’s hotel economy, or Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in Organizational learning. Chance are, you have just started your course or got through the last academic year producing Mediocre essays at best. Below are 7 tips to help you submit great essays.

1. Plan it well and start NOW

Ok. I know you will have heard it a lot recently – you need to plan your time, but its true. You need to put aside time from your lectures and socializing with your friends (not to mention a few hours earning money in your job) to actually understand what you will be researching and writing in your essay. Starting straight after you get set the task will put you in a better position than starting a day before submission.

2. Establish clear direction and understanding

If you are wanting for people reading your essay to know that you are confident in writing essays and understanding your topic, then you yourself should be clear about what direction the essay is headed in. Oh, and it could be good if you establish a direction for your research, structure and argument – they’re winning aspects of a great essay.

3. Your thoughts and research materials need to be organized

Just to make a clear point, you have to actually read and understand research materials – some students fail to notice that. If you organize these materials, by highlighting, alphabetical-Ising and ensuring you know which quote is where then you should be able to find information to address quickly and find opinionated arguments to support your flow of argument.

4. Learn from other writers

Are you confused about what or how to write? Then go take a look at other people’s essays – how have they leaped you glued to their paper and managed to keep consistent in their writing style? Is it interesting to read or does the paper jump around from one position to the next? Have a word with your lecturers/professors and librarians to see other essays from the previous year – are you up to par with them?

5. Plagiarism is a NO, NO

If you are managing your research material right, then you should be keeping track of the references and quotations, don’t pass your work off as someone else’s as it just won’t work – you will get caught. Your professor marking your essay is a professional and expert in the subject you are writing about – they will have read all the sources of the works you have written and know the style of certain authors. If you copy something from an author, and don’t reference it, then they will spot it a mile off, just don’t do it.

6. Draft a copy

Writing a first draft to check over your work is imperative, not only because you will probably re-write some bits because they don’t make sense, but also because you will want to ensure you have got everything in. Miss out the introduction and conclusion at this point though, as you will want to make sure your essay body is done.

7. Presentation is everything

Being a genius and submitting something that is perfect is only seen in the movies. Being human means we can’t notice mistakes in grammar, spelling and flow of argument all of the time – our brains simply don’t let us. You may spell check your document, but do you have it proofread by another person? If not, then you are making a huge mistake – not only will your essay look poorly written, but the illogical flow of argument and bad sentence structure could me the difference of a few percentage in your mark. The result – it could be the difference between a 1st and a 2:1 to your final grade, or you missing out on a distinction on your masters, even because of a few mistakes in a couple of essays – they all add up.

So you need some help or tips on how to study, not a problem. Studying is not hard, and getting good grades is not hard either. It’s all simply a matter of how much effort and work you are willing to put in. Keep in mind however that studying requires work, and sometimes for certain people this can mean hard work.

Like anything in life that is worth doing work and focus are required. Look at it this way, if you are making sacrifices now they will pay off in the future. Some other people are just lucky and don’t really have to work that hard. There is a lot of variance when it comes to studying and how to study properly. Different people learn in different ways, what I am going to address here is basically some tips on how study effectively.

If you are in college or university, don’t miss classes as a rule of thumb. Go to lectures pay attention, sit in the front of the class, get to know your teachers and take notes as well.

Make sure you balance study time with play time. In university you’re naturally going to go out and party and drink. One good thing you can do is incorporate some exercise. Exercising stimulates the brain and body and will help you in focusing on studying as well. Prepare for tests and examinations well in advance. It has been proven that studying right after a class can help your brain retain the information you learned 90 percent better.

Find out what works for you and stick with it. Making practice tests is one of the best things you can do. When doing your readings browse through the chapter first and make a question out of headings and or sub headings. When you read this will create a purpose for your reading. You are searching for an answer. Also its good to brows through the chapter first and read the problems at the end of each chapter. Take notes while you read and then consolidate your lecture notes and book notes. Do problems and practice and practice till you know it like the back of your hand.

In order to make practices tests for the purpose of studying all you got to do is utilize questions from class from the end of the chapters make up your own multiple choice by looking at lecture slides etc.

Our modern languages all have roots in the ancient languages from the past. English words in particular stem from Latin or Greek and as such, many of the meanings to these can be traced back directly to those original languages. Vocabulary quizzes gives everyone a chance to try out their knowledge of the language and is a useful tool to improve language skills.

Of course, these days, many slang expressions have come up from the type of language that we use in day to day life. Take, for example, some of the ruder phrases in the language. These stem from Anglo Saxon times and probably had nothing to do with the meanings that we have for them today.

Even well known sayings spring from what was normal for the time that they were coined. For example, who has heard of the expression ‘three square meals a day?’ This actually came from ships of old where plates were made from timber. Each plate was a square of wood, hence the three square meals saying that still exists today.

For those who want to improve their language skills, finding out about the origin or the language can help tremendously. It is sometimes quite easy to figure out the meaning of some of the individual parts of the language just by splitting it into several pieces. This is called working out the root and will give the student a good start in learning or expanding their language skills.

For others, challenging themselves with competitions is probably the fastest way to work out and learn the language. Everyone learns better when they are rushed to think of the language without hesitating. Family groups will also benefit from this type of game where everyone must choose a letter and then write down things in specific categories beginning with that letter. A flower, fruit, name of a girl and boy etc. If they have the same name as another player then they lose a point. This gets people to think outside the box, so to speak, and think of unusual words that they would not normally think about.

Of course, it does not have to be this complicated. Merely learning a different phrase every day, and using it when they can fit it into normal conversation, will also improve skills when it comes to languages.

Children unhesitatingly pick up the language just by listening and repeating the phrase parrot fashion. This also sometimes helps with adults who are expanding their language skills. After some time, it suddenly ‘clicks’ in the brain what this phrase actually means. Although some may think that this is only for the children, it has been proved to work with adults who may have had some problems when they were younger.

If the adult is an executive, or is planning to be, it is of the utmost importance that their language be as broad as possible. Otherwise, it may reflect badly on them when they meet people who are more educated than them.
