“So it’s that time of the year when those of you…applying to B-school [business school] must be working furiously trying to put together your application package…Don’t sweat! Applying to a B-school…is a great roller-coaster ride. “The sooner one learns to relax,… the sooner one can begin to enjoy it, and…do better justice to it.” This quote may be found at Businessweek posted on Jan. 7, 2007 by Vivek Bhatnagar in the MBA Journals, “From India to Octopus’ Garden.”

The above quote applies to all applications to online college degree programs, not just to business school applications. Below are some of the requirements for applying to online colleges.

Prerequisites

If you are interested in online education, there may be some prerequisites required for the online degree program you choose. The best way to find out if prerequisites are required and which ones are needed is to check the online admissions pages of the college. Prerequisites will vary.

For an associate’s degree, you will need:

* a high school diploma or its equivalent or

* have a job, be at least 18 years old, and have Internet access.

* For some majors, such as English and mathematics, you may need to pass basic
competency English and mathematics tests or take prerequisite courses.

For a bachelor’s degree program, you will need:

* a high school diploma or its equivalent

* or an associate’s degree.

* For some majors, such as English and mathematics, you may need to pass basic
competency English and mathematics tests or take prerequisite courses.

To join a master’s program, you need:

* a bachelor’s degree from a college that is, at minimum, regionally accredited

* a 2.5 to 3.0 grade point average (GPA)

* either the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).

For certification programs, you may need:

* a job in the field of the certification.

(These facts may be found at: “Prerequisites for Enrolling in an Online College” by Vicky Phillips, Published on Wednesday, 9th of August, 2006 on: http://oedb.org/library and on: http://www.geteducated.com)

The College Application

To apply to an online college, you will need to provide your high school diploma or equivalent, all college transcripts, results of any tests that are required, and, possibly, your birth certificate. You may have to take some of the tests mentioned above. The GRE tests verbal and quantitative skills: vocabulary, reading comprehension, and math, including statistics and algebra.

The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is math free. It tests your ability to think comparatively, such as “Cat is to dog as kitten is to puppy.” The MAT is often required by graduate schools in education, human resources, library science and the social sciences. Graduate schools in business or management often require the GMAT. The GMAT does not test your knowledge of management or business. It tests verbal skills, mathematical knowledge (through calculus), and writing aptitude.

If the college you are interested in is accredited, it will accept course credit earned at other colleges. You will fill out paperwork and provide transcripts of the classes you have taken. Some online colleges give course credit for work experience; you may have to take a test to show how much you learned. Usually the application for an online college can be completed over the Internet.

When you apply, you may meet with an advisor to help you in deciding which program to enroll in, how to apply for financial assistance, and answer your questions. Online degree programs require internet access. For that reason, the college may require you to have certain hardware and software programs. Computer upgrades may be needed to meet course requirements, for example, additional memory needed. Most online colleges require computers that are PCs rather than Apple Macintosh computers.

For online degree applications, put together needed materials, fulfill test requirements, and complete an application. Confer with an advisor. Check to make sure you have the required computer capabilities. After application approval, you’ll be on your way!

By: Kenneth Anczerewicz

There are those who are born to teach. That is their only dream in life – to become a teacher. Many people know that teachers are overworked and underpaid. Teaching is the only way that will fulfill the lives of born teachers. If you want to become a teacher, however, one must first obtain a college degree, which is a lot easier said than done.

Attending a college or university and getting a degree that allows one to teach means four full years of attending classes, lectures, labs, etc. Is it cheap? Not a chance. The price of a four-year degree education is far outpacing the rate of inflation. There are not a lot of hard working families who can afford to send a child to college for four years without some financial help.

Scholarships become part of our dinner or lunchtime conversations. No more than high school diploma, their hopes for advancing beyond entry level are greatly diminished. To earn power of many people who has a high school diploma or a GED is twice as good as it is for those without either. But to earn potential of many people with a BA degree is twice as good as that of those who only have a high school diploma or a GED. To get a BA degree makes good financial sense.

You will earn as much money over your lifetime with a BA education degree as you will earn without one. It all comes down to ponds or cents. Now days a person of any age or background can get a BA degree online. No admission requirements to meet and the price is only a fraction of that required for attending a brick-and-mortar college or university.

The progress toward getting a BA degree can be made at each student’s own pace. There are no requirements for how many credit hours must be signed up for in any given period of time. During you study the degree course of the struggle to figure out how to pay for a college education, some families and potential college students discover that courses can be taken online. If you want full degrees in education can be earned online and at a fraction of the cost of a four year career at a brick and mortar college or university.

A B.A education degree allows the born to teach teacher to teach and without starting out so deeply in debt that they will spend years crawling out from under it. The thing an online student needs to find out for he is if an online degree is accepted by the school at which he or she wishes to teach. Online B.A education degrees are being accepted more often now but all schools do not accept a degree that was totally earned online.

A mixture of brick and Mortar College and universities courses and online college courses is the best answer. One quick here, you have to check for accreditation. Many online School, colleges and universities announce that they are accredited. They institution never hide the fact you will not have to dig through many pages on their websites to determine whether they are accredited or not. The same is true for brick colleges and universities. They will always say that they are an accredited institution.

By: Syeda Mahwish Fatima Naqvi

For today’s student, distance learning is a worthwhile and affordable way to work toward a GED, usually the most official way for an adult to demonstrate the skills of a high school graduate. But there are a growing number of companies and schools who aren’t really in the business of education. Instead, they’re in the education business — their main business is selling quick and easy programs or simple online tests, complete with worthless transcripts and fake diplomas.

There are exceptions. But as a rule most transcripts and diplomas ordered or obtained from online high schools are useless. Unfortunately, students and adult learners are often and easily misled by diploma factories or diploma mills. Many of these companies and ’schools’ appear to be professional businesses or accredited educational institutions. So, when selecting online education, it’s smart to be cautious. Make sure the online learning solution is a real solution, and will help you achieve your goals.

First, it pays to understand how diploma factories work. Many adult learners fall victim to diploma scams, usually paying $200 to $800 in tuition, testing, transcript or diploma fees. But because the school or program isn’t accredited, the diploma has no value. When it comes to employers, job training programs, tech schools, community colleges and universities, bogus diplomas are useless. And often, new ‘graduates’ don’t learn that a diploma has no value until they’re told by an employer or a college admissions department.

In most cases, the GED — the term for General Education Development credential — is the official ‘diploma’ that’s meaningful for adults who never completed their high school education. For today’s 34 to 38 million adults in the US who never graduated from high school, passing the GED test is a pass key to both career and educational opportunities. That’s because approximately 95 percent of employers and even more US colleges and universities accept the GED.

When choosing an education program, a student’s best bet is a GED solution, whether enrolling in a local GED class or using a self-guided online GED program. If online learning or distance learning is the solution you need, look for a program that includes all the components necessary to prepare for the GED test.

Here are some guidelines for choosing a quality learning solutions provider and avoiding bogus schools or fake diploma scams:
GED guidelines are established by the American Council on Education. Under the agency’s rules, the test covers science, social studies, language arts reading and writing, and math — including algebra, geometry and data analysis. Find a program that includes all testing areas; avoid any solution or school that doesn’t include all test areas or information about test areas and the ACE’s requirements. GED practice tests are available online. These tests are a good way for a student to determine skill strengths and weaknesses and to understand how the test works. But the actual GED test cannot be taken online! The test is only given at official test sites. So avoid any company that claims to offer the official GED test or a quick version online. Read the fine print, before you pay — make sure you understand what the company or school is offering and determine if it’s worth the price. Is it a worthwhile learning process or just a fake diploma? Will it help you progress in your career or education? Ask for advice if you’re not sure. Look for outside information about companies or schools. Discover what other teachers, students and adult learners have experienced. Contact a department of education. Explore GED and education message boards, online forums or learning communities. Are there complaints, or reports of success? Be very cautious in dealing with any company or online high school that offers a diploma or transcript after passing a quick online test. The GED test is hard! The exam is a timed 7.5-hour test.

Consider education as an important investment — an investment you make in yourself and your future. Make sure your investment is a good one, and gives you a return that’s worthwhile. The GED credential might be harder to get than a $250 diploma, but you can sure count on it to take you to where you want to go.

For more information about the GED online, visit http://www.passGED.com. While products are offered, the website provides plenty of free study, test tips and testing resources, with links to other quality resource and information providers.

By: Leonard Williams
